Dr. Steve Hackett, Principal Economist
Dr. Steven Hackett is Professor of Economics at Humboldt State University. He has 20 years of professional experience as a PhD-trained economist. Hackett has authored or co-authored more than 30 scholarly refereed journal articles, books, technical studies, and professional reports relating to economics and public policy. He has also contributed to a large number of environmental and economic development planning documents. Hackett works in three broad areas – fisheries economics and policy, the economics of energy and climate policy, and economic development. Some recent highlights include:
- Developing the California Ocean Fish Harvester Economic Model for the California Department of Fish and Game.
- Co-authoring the State of California’s white paper report on wave energy for the California Ocean Protection Council and California Energy Commission.
- Providing senior economic development consulting services for the cities of Arcata, Fortuna, and Rio Dell.
- Contributing to several EIS technical reports evaluating the impacts of USDA APHIS's proposed deregulation of GMO alfalfa cultivars for use in US agriculture.
Hackett served as founding director of HSU's Office for Economic, Community, and Business Development. He received an American Planning Association award for economic development planning. His policy research on California's Dungeness crab fishery (in collaboration with colleagues at HSU and at UC-Davis) received the 2005 gold award for best refereed journal article by the Association of Natural Resource Extension Professionals. In recognition of his research into regional economic issues, and what HSU President Rollin Richmond described as "the clarity and significance his work brings to global questions of environmental economics," Hackett was selected as Humboldt State University's Scholar of the Year for 2005.
